What is Virtual Therapy

Therapy through using an avatar has been growing in recognition and credibility since it started only a few years ago. Places like Preferred Family Healthcare Center in Kirksville, Missouri report several hundred patients now seeing virtual counselors. There are many reasons someone might seek virtual treatment. Internet access could cross the barriers that prevent access to Real Life therapy. For example people who live in rural areas, or have a physical disabilities that makes it difficult for them to get around.
Virtual therapy isn't easy. The somewhat objective and limited setting presents challenges even for ideal patients. And, virtual therapy isn't for everyone. For example, it would not be a good setting for people living with disorders that make it difficult for them to tell difference between reality and fantasy, like schizo-affective or schizophrenia. Conversely, therapy for addiction or codependency has proved viable in a virtual office, as well other short term emotional, cognitive behavioral issues.
The therapist should be a real life train practitioner with advanced experience within the cyber world, and/or trainings in using technology in creating and maintaining the therapeutic atmosphere.
